Repairing the fairing

I finally discovered a practical use for the clear plastic disc that is at the top of a tall stack of optical discs.

All of my fairings have cracked at the handlebar mounting area. Lots of stress there and it's what hits the ground first when the bike falls over.
I cut one of these discs in half and trimmed it to fit the curve of the fairing. Marked and drilled the holes. Cleaned the area carefully with soap and water, dried it, cleaned it with alcohol. Using heavy duty clear packing tape, I carefully repaired the cracks on both front and back surfaces. Using another small patch of tape, I put the disc in place on the inside surface and attached the fairing to the mounts.

The clear plastic disc has added signficant support to the area covered by repair tape. When the adhesive oxidizes I will probably put a disc on both front and rear surfaces of the fairing.

bogiesan: I too, have a few cracks around the upper Zzipper mounts. When I mentioned the concern to Zzipper some years ago, the answer was in essence "our customers don't report any cracks at the fairing mounts". The fairing is stressed particularly at the mounting points, so if I were asked to advise Zzipper, I'd tell them to glue some doubler plates around the mounting area to lengthen the life of the product. But I've not been asked.

Rats. Lying rats. Each of my three Zippers has come apart around the holes. All of the holes. Each and every hole has cracked and starred and otherwise become a problem. Problems that had to be repaired with brass escutcheons, gaffer tape or CD blanks.
