Under Seat Rack

For those of you with the Terra Cycle under seat rack...

How wide is it? How tall top to bottom? Front to back?

Thanks,
~R

Thanks. I appreciate it. Trying to fit various bags.

Other than the easy reacher from ERRC/Inertia Designs, I've never found a commercial bag that actually fits. All front panniers, while short enough (top to bottom) are too short (from front to back) to be practical; just not enough volume/capacity. And most front pannier bags are designed for a different mounting system. The brackets are too far down on the back panel which puts the access on the top of the bag too close to the underside of the seat.

Rear panniers are too tall to be mounted under the seat and will drag on corners.

The ERRC/Inertia bags are ideal but rather poorly made. I've been through three pairs in ten years; the back panel material breaks and the zippers totally suck. Neither is up to the tasks they are required to perform.

You can have custom bags crafted for your Easy Racers bike in most larger cities for about what ERRC charges. The rack attachment is easily crafted from aluminum bar stock and does not need to be terribly robust. The important design features include:
1. a positive attachment to keep the bags from bouncing off
2. a sturdy back panel that will keep its shape for many years
3. method and location of entry. Do you want to be able to get in and out of the bags while seated or not?
4. external features like bottle bags or mesh panels

Here in Boise ID we have at least three shops that build custom bike panniers. They're good at it.

Thanks for the input on the bags!

At the time that I wrote the above I was designing my own underseat rack & was trying to figure out how big to make it.

I have since come across a Terra Cycle rack & the Lloonngg bags used. I have mounted them on my bike & will continue to design/ build my own rack for my wife's TE.

We might have to look into locally produced "custom" bags too. I live very near Lake Michigan & there are several folks around who do waterproof sewing for the boating industry.

Thanks,
~Roger

Arkel also makes bags for the underseat rack. I had a pair once but found they were too bulky and almost drug the ground. They are certainly better made than the ER bags (and more expensive).
